Caprice

Caprice is inspired by the America's Cup boats of the early 1900's. At that time there were no restrictions on the size of the sails you could have, when seen on the ocean you would just see two elegant white sails with beautiful flowing curves which the cloth would take on when the craft is trimmed correctly.

In my tiny experience I would also try to achieve this but sailing small boats on small lakes the beauty was soon lost as you had to tack or turn to avoid collisions with others or the bank. In making Caprice I attempt to capture the grace and beauty of those sails whatever the weather does. Mirror polishing the sails means they create distorted reflections of each other as the wind changes the direction of the sculpture.

Placing the hull in the water also damps the rotation of the whole piece giving it the grace of the larger crafts it pays hommage to.
